Merrifield House is nestled among lush green fields with beautiful panoramic views towards Dartmoor National Park. Tucked just off the A379, we’re perfectly placed between the villages of Churchstow and Aveton Gifford, with Kingsbridge around 3.5 miles away and Salcombe approximately 7 miles.

It’s an ideal base for exploring South Devon - whether you’re walking the South West Coast Path, swimming, cycling, surfing, sailing or discovering hidden beaches, charming villages and the mysterious landscapes of Dartmoor.

Nearby Kingsbridge and Salcombe are charming estuary towns in the South Hams, surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. Both offer a lovely selection of independent shops, galleries, cafés, restaurants and welcoming pubs. Kingsbridge also has a cinema, leisure centre with swimming pool and gym, and two supermarkets, making it easy to combine a peaceful countryside stay with all the amenities you need.

Directions

If you are driving to Merrifield House, you may find these directions useful. Please do not use the post code in SAT NAV, as it will take you to a neighbouring farm. Instead use the search term 'MERRIFIELD HOUSE KINGSBRIDGE' in Google Maps.

Coming from Churchstow: From Bantham Cross roundabout, take A379 towards Aveton Gifford/ Plymouth. Approx. third of a mile off roundabout, turn right off A379 (if you reach the Natural Burial Ground, you have gone too far).

Coming from Aveton Gifford: At the top of Aveton Gifford hill (just after Natural Burial Ground seen on right hand side), turn left off A379.

After you have turned off the A379, you will turn onto a small lane. You will find Merrifield House towards the bottom of the lane on the left. Please drive mindfully as you enter the property grounds - there is plenty of parking at the REAR of the house - ideally park on the RIGHT hand side of the carpark.

Getting here

Car

Merrifield House is approximately 3.5 miles from Kingsbridge and is surrounded by beautiful countryside, so we recommend having a car during your stay for the greatest flexibility. Please see the directions above for further information on finding us.

Train

Our nearest railway station is Totnes, approximately 16 miles from Merrifield House, with direct services to and from London, Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth. Travel on the Paddington–Plymouth line and alight at Totnes or Plymouth. From either station, you can connect by bus to Kingsbridge, Churchstow or Aveton Gifford. From there, a short taxi journey will bring you to Merrifield House.

Bus

Our nearest bus stops are Churchstow, Aveton Gifford and Kingsbridge. Monday to Saturday (excluding bank holidays), Stagecoach #3 Dartmouth/Plymouth service operates with stops at Churchstow (1 mile), Aveton Gifford (2 miles) and Kingsbridge (3.5 miles). On Sundays and bank holidays, Stagecoach #3 Dartmouth/Kingsbridge service operates to Kingsbridge (3.5 miles), followed by a short taxi ride to Merrifield House.

Coach

Coach services operate from London Victoria Coach Station to Plymouth, with direct journeys or services requiring one change, usually in Bristol or Exeter. Tickets can be booked in advance through National Express or Megabus. From Plymouth, you’ll then need to continue your journey by connecting bus or taxi to Merrifield House, approximately 20 miles away.

Plane

Merrifield House is within easy reach of both Exeter and Newquay Airports, making it accessible for guests travelling from across the UK and further afield. Both airports offer a range of domestic and international flights, with onward travel to Merrifield House by car, taxi or public transport.

Parking and access

Retreat Guests - Your arrival and departure times will be confirmed in your retreat booking confirmation email. In most cases, check-in is from 16:00pm and check-out is by 12:00pm, but please always check your confirmation email for the specific times.

Independent Guests - For independent stays, check-in is from 17:00pm and check-out is by 10:00am.

Access to Your Room - Hala Shala (Room Two) is accessed via the upstairs entrance, while Ustra Shala (Room One) and Matsya Shala (Room Three) are accessed via the downstairs entrance. All rooms can be reached without navigating internal stairs. A large ramp with a handrail leads to the upstairs entrance via the main front door. Please note that there are three small steps at both the upstairs and downstairs entrances, which guests with mobility concerns should take into consideration.

Parking & Security - Free off-road parking is available at Merrifield House. Where possible, we kindly ask guests to car share to help reduce the number of vehicles on site.

For your safety and security, external security cameras operate around the property entrances and car park.

Transfers

All guests are responsible for their own transport to and from Merrifield House.

However, we aim to be as helpful and flexible as we can.

Therefore, if at all possible, we are happy to offer free picks up from Kingsbridge, Churchstow and Aveton Gifford, subject to availability.
