Food & refreshments

Whether you’re joining us for a retreat or staying independently, we want you to feel well looked after and at home at Merrifield House.

Retreat Guests - For private retreats, delicious vegetarian meals are included as outlined in your retreat programme agreement. Menus vary depending on the experience, but wherever possible we use fresh, locally sourced produce. If you have any dietary requirements, allergies or specific food preferences, please let me know when booking so I can do my best to accommodate your needs.

Refreshments in Your Room - All guests will find a few thoughtful refreshments in their room, including a kettle, teapot, glasses and teacups, bottled water, a selection of teas and coffee, sugar and a few snacks. Perfect for enjoying a quiet cuppa in the comfort of your room.

The Garden Snug - Our cosy garden snug offers a lovely space to relax, enjoy a change of scenery and catch up with fellow guests. You’re welcome to make yourself a hot drink, collect fresh milk for your room, or store and enjoy your own food and drinks. The shared space includes comfortable seating, a fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle, caffetieres, 2 hob electric cooker, crockery, cutlery and glasses.

Exploring Local Food - If you fancy eating out, there are plenty of cafés, pubs and restaurants nearby offering a variety of options. For basic supplies, Churchstow and Aveton Gifford village shops are approximately 1.5 miles away, while Kingsbridge, around 3 miles away, has larger supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons.

Whether you’re enjoying a freshly prepared meal, a quiet cup of tea in your room or discovering one of our lovely local eateries, we hope you enjoy a relaxed and nourishing stay.

Entertainment and Wi-Fi

While Merrifield House is all about slowing down and switching off, we know it’s lovely to have a few home comforts too.

Smart TV & Streaming - Each room has a Smart TV with Netflix, offering plenty of films, documentaries and dramas to enjoy during your stay. You’ll also have access to BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and My5.

Books, Games & Puzzles - If you fancy a break from the screen, you’ll find a selection of books, games and puzzles in the downstairs hallway. Feel free to browse, borrow and settle in with something you enjoy.

Stay Connected… or Switch Off - Free fibre-optic Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, so you can easily stay connected on your phone, tablet or laptop. Or, if what you really need is a little digital detox, simply switch your device to airplane mode, put it away and enjoy the peace and quiet of Merrifield House.

Simply Soulful Yoga & Therapies at Merrifield House

Merrifield House is also home to Simply Soulful Yoga & Therapies, with a dedicated yoga studio and treatment room on-site.

Private and bespoke classes and experiences can be created around you, whether you’re staying with us for a restorative getaway, celebrating with friends or looking for something a little different.

Yoga Studio

A dedicated yoga studio on-site offering private 1:1 yoga sessions and bespoke retreats. We also create personalised Wellness Days and Corporate Away-Days, combining yoga, movement, relaxation and nature.

Treatments

A dedicated treatment room offering a range of relaxing and restorative treatments. Choose from massage, reflexology, Hopi ear candles and Reiki, with each treatment designed to give you a little time to pause, unwind and reconnect.

Padma Shala

Some experiences may take place beneath the sun, moon and stars, while others are enjoyed inside the cosy Padma Shala. Private retreat guests are welcome to relax between sessions — a peaceful place to pause, read, reflect or unwind *

If you’d like to enjoy a private yoga session or treatment during your stay, simply get in touch and we’ll be happy to arrange a time that works for you.

Waste and recycling

General Waste - Small waste bins are provided in each bedroom and bathroom for everyday waste. For larger items of general waste or unwanted food, you’ll find a black wheelie bin outside, to the left of the car park, behind the wooden gate marked “Private”. Simply lean over the fence and lift the lid to use it.

Recycling - Our recycling bin is located in the Outside Snug. Please place clean, paper, cardboard, aluminium tins and cans, glass and plastic, in the recycling bin.

Food Waste and Coffee Grounds - We compost our food waste wherever possible to help reduce waste and nourish the vegetable garden. Please place food scraps and coffee grounds in the compost bin, and use the coffee waste caddy provided for used coffee grounds. Please note that meat and dairy products cannot be composted and should be placed in the general waste bin.

Monday Refuge Collection - Our local waste contractor collects from Merrifield House early on Monday mornings and afternoons, so please be mindful that a large collection lorry will enter the property at these times.

Our Septic Tank - Merrifield House uses a septic tank, so please help us keep it happy! Only pee, poop and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet.

Dog Waste - Please place dog poop bags in the black bin located next to the old swimming pool, at the entrance to the upper field.

We’re committed to keeping Merrifield House as environmentally friendly as possible, so we’d really appreciate your help with our waste and recycling.
