If you’ve ever experienced bloating, discomfort, or sluggish digestion, you know how it can affect your mood, energy, and overall sense of well-being. The discomfort can leave you feeling heavy, irritated, and disconnected from your body.
The good news? Yoga can help! By promoting gentle movement, digestion-friendly poses, and mindfulness, yoga can provide effective relief from digestive issues, including bloating, constipation, and indigestion.
Let’s dive into how yoga can help soothe your digestive system and bring balance back to your body.
Understanding Digestive Discomfort and Bloating
Bloating and digestive discomfort can occur for various reasons:
Dietary Choices: Eating foods that are hard to digest, too spicy, or rich in fats can cause bloating and indigestion.
Stress: Anxiety or emotional stress can directly affect your digestion, slowing down the process and leading to discomfort.
Poor Posture: Slouching or sitting for long periods of time can restrict the flow of energy through the digestive system, leading to sluggish digestion.
Lack of Movement: A sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to digestive issues by slowing down the natural movement of food through the gut.
Yoga works by promoting better digestion, calming the nervous system, and releasing physical tension that can inhibit the digestive process.
How Yoga Helps Digestive Health
Yoga encourages movement in the abdominal region, stimulates the digestive organs, and supports the nervous system in relieving stress. Here’s how yoga helps with bloating and digestive discomfort:
Stimulates the Digestive System - Certain yoga poses can massage the internal organs, stimulating peristalsis (the wave-like muscle contractions that move food through your digestive tract), helping to relieve constipation and bloating.
Reduces Stress and Anxiety - As yoga focuses on breath and mindfulness, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” mode), allowing the body to focus on digestion and healing. Reducing stress can directly improve digestive health.
Improves Circulation - Yoga improves blood circulation, ensuring that nutrients are effectively delivered to the digestive organs, and waste products are efficiently removed. Poses that open the chest and abdomen help boost circulation in the digestive area.
My Approach to Digestion-Friendly Yoga
In my yoga sessions, I focus on gentle and mindful movements that encourage healthy digestion, reduce bloating, and promote relaxation. Here’s how I incorporate digestion-friendly practices:
💚 Gentle Movement and Flow - I guide you through sequences that encourage healthy digestion, focusing on the abdominal region to aid in the smooth movement of food through the digestive system.
💚 Breathwork for Digestion - The power of the breath is emphasized, using deep, calming breaths to stimulate the digestive organs and relieve stress.
💚 Mindful Eating Practices - I also encourage mindful eating during retreat or yoga sessions. This practice allows for better digestion by reducing stress while eating and promoting awareness of hunger and fullness cues.
💚 Personalised Sessions - Whether you’re dealing with bloating, indigestion, or constipation, I can provide customized sequences that target your specific digestive concerns.
Yoga Sequence to Relieve Bloating and Digestive Discomfort
If you’re looking to alleviate digestive discomfort and bloating, this short sequence can be done at home or in a class to promote better digestion and relieve bloating.
Seated Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana) - Sit with your legs crossed. Inhale as you lengthen your spine, and as you exhale, twist gently to one side, placing your opposite hand on the knee for leverage. Hold for 5–10 breaths, then switch sides. Benefits: This pose massages the internal organs, promoting the movement of digestion and reducing bloating.
Wind-Relieving Pose (Pawanmuktasana) - Lie on your back, hug one knee into your chest, and gently squeeze it with both hands. Hold for 5–10 breaths and repeat on the other side. Benefits: A fantastic pose for relieving gas and bloating, stimulating digestion, and releasing tension in the lower abdomen.
Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) - Come to all fours, inhale as you arch your back (Cow), and exhale as you round your spine (Cat). Repeat for 5–10 rounds of breath. Benefits: This gentle flow promotes flexibility in the spine and stimulates the abdominal area, aiding digestion and easing discomfort.
Child’s Pose (Balasana) - Sit back onto your heels and extend your arms forward on the mat, allowing your chest to fall toward the ground. Hold for 5–10 breaths. Benefits: This restorative pose helps relieve stress and relaxes the digestive organs, easing discomfort.
Affirmation for Digestive Comfort - “I nourish my body with ease. I trust my body’s ability to digest and release with calm and balance.”
This affirmation encourages a positive relationship with your digestive system. It reminds you to trust your body’s natural processes and allow for relaxation while eating and digesting.
Essential Oil for Digestive Support
Ginger Essential Oil - Ginger is well-known for its digestive benefits. It helps reduce nausea, bloating, and indigestion by stimulating the digestive system. How to Use: Diffuse ginger oil to promote digestive health, or dilute it with a carrier oil and apply it to the abdomen in a circular motion for relief from bloating.
Peppermint Essential Oil - Peppermint helps relieve bloating and indigestion by relaxing the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and promoting better digestion. How to Use: Dilute peppermint oil with a carrier oil and apply it to the abdomen in a clockwise motion to stimulate digestion. It can also be used in a diffuser during practice to help settle the stomach.
