Because you shouldn’t have to live in discomfort every day!
Back pain can be a constant shadow - tight, dull, and distracting, or sharp and overwhelming. Whether it’s from sitting at a desk, carrying stress in your body, or years of wear and tear, chronic back discomfort can make even simple tasks feel exhausting.
But here’s the beautiful truth: movement can heal.
When practised mindfully, yoga offers a powerful, natural way to relieve pain, reduce stiffness, and restore mobility - without needing to push or strain. It’s not about touching your toes; it’s about coming home to your body with kindness and building strength, flexibility, and awareness over time.
What Causes Chronic Back Pain?
Back pain is incredibly common - affecting around 80% of adults at some point in their lives. While causes vary, the most frequent culprits include:
Poor posture (especially from sitting or screen use)
Muscle imbalances or core weakness
Tension from stress and emotional holding
Lack of movement or mobility
Old injuries or spinal conditions (like herniated discs or sciatica)
Pain can become cyclical - when movement feels painful, we move less… but moving less can cause more pain. Yoga gently breaks that cycle, encouraging you to rebuild strength and trust in your body, one breath at a time.
How Yoga Helps Back Pain
Releases Tension in Tight Muscles - Gentle stretching opens up the hips, shoulders, and hamstrings—areas that often pull on the lower back.
Builds Core Strength for Stability - A strong core (not just your abs!) supports your spine and reduces the load on your back.
Improves Postural Awareness - Yoga teaches you to sit, stand, and move with better alignment—protecting your spine throughout the day.
Calms the Nervous System - Slow breathing and mindful movement help ease the stress response, reducing the physical and emotional components of pain.
Supports Long-Term Mobility - Consistent yoga builds strength and flexibility gradually, making it a sustainable way to care for your back—without quick fixes or extremes.
Simply Soulful Yoga’s Approach to Back-Friendly Yoga
At the heart of what I offer is compassionate movement—tailored to meet you where you are, and help you feel safe and supported.
You don’t need to be flexible or pain-free to begin - I guide you gently, helping you learn which movements nourish your spine and which ones to modify or avoid.
Small steps create big change - Even 10 minutes of breath-led movement each day can bring lasting improvement over time.
You’ll learn tools you can use anywhere - Whether it’s a pose to unwind after work or a breathing technique to ease a flare-up, you’ll build a toolkit for daily self-care.
It’s not just physical—it’s emotional too - I hold space for the emotional weight of pain and support you in reconnecting with your body in a new, empowering way.
A Gentle Back Care Yoga Sequence to Try (always listen to body and adapt poses where necessary)
Here’s a short practice you can do daily, especially after long periods of sitting or standing:
Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) - Come to hands and knees. Inhale to arch your back (cow), lifting the chest and tailbone. Exhale to round your spine (cat), drawing the belly in. Repeat 5–10 rounds slowly. Loosens the spine, warms up the muscles, and encourages mobility.
Sphinx Pose - Lie on your belly, propping yourself on your forearms with elbows under shoulders. Lift the chest slightly and breathe deeply. Stay 1–2 minutes. Strengthens the lower back while encouraging a gentle spinal curve.
Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana) - Lie on your back, draw one knee across the body for a spinal twist. Keep both shoulders on the mat. Breathe into the stretch. Releases tension from the lower back and hips.
Knees-to-Chest Pose (Apanasana) - Draw both knees to the chest and gently rock side to side. Soothes the lower back and calms the nervous system.
Affirmation for Back Support and Healing - “I am supported. My body knows how to heal. Each breath brings relief and release.”
Repeat this in Sphinx or during your final relaxation, letting each word soften your body and steady your mind.
Essential Oil for Back Tension - Basil Essential Oil – This lesser-known gem is known for its anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxing properties. Add a few drops to a carrier oil and gently massage into the lower back, or diffuse during your practice to soothe tension and mental fatigue.
Bonus Tip: Try combining basil with lavender or marjoram for a calming, muscle-loving blend.
