What are the Chakras?

Have you heard the term ‘Chakra’ but unsure what it means?

The subject of Chakras, is one of my all-time favourites. It is a term that often comes up in my reiki treatments and my yoga classes, and more specifically I have classes and retreats which focus on just the Chakras. So, if you are unsure what a chakra is, how they might affect your physical and emotional health, and how they can help you find balance, and then please read on…

The word chakra comes from Sanskrit meaning ‘wheel’. We have seven ‘wheels of energy’ which spin centrally up the spine, these are our seven main chakras. When the chakras are balanced, we ourselves are physically and emotional balanced too.

Root chakra, also known as the Muladhara chakra. It is located at the base of spine. It is represented by the earth element and the colour red. When the Muladhara chakra is balanced, we feel grounded, secure and stable. On a physical level, it helps balance our feet, legs, bones, teeth and colon. Affirmation for the Muladhara chakra “I am a strong and powerful creator. I am safe and loved”.

Sacral chakra, also known as the Svadisthana chakra. It is located in the pelvis. It is represented by the water element and the colour orange. When the Svadisthana chakra is balanced, we feel creative, confident and optimistic. On a physical level, it helps balance our pelvis, reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder and lower back. Affirmation for the Svadisthana chakra “I unleash fun & creativity from within me”.

Solar plexus chakra, also known as the Manipura chakra. It is located in the navel. It is represented by the fire element and the colour yellow. When the Manipura chakra is balanced, we feel strong willed, confident and empowered. On a physical level, it helps balance our liver, gall bladder, spleen, stomach, kidneys and digestive system. Affirmation for Manipura chakra “I am abundant in everything I ask for. I receive with gratitude”.

Heart chakra, also known as the Anahata chakra. It is located in the chest. It is represented by the air element and the colours pink and green. When the Anahata chakra is balanced, we feel compassion, devotion and joy. On a physical level, it helps balance our heart, lungs, circulation, arms and hands. Affirmation for the Anahata chakra “Love flows towards me from every direction. I relax into peace”.

Throat chakra, also known as the Vishuddha chakra. It is located in the throat. It is represented by the space element and the colour blue. When the Vishuddha chakra is balanced, we feel imaginative, truthful and decisive. On a physical level, it helps balance our throat, jaw, vocal cords, thyroid gland and hearing. Affirmation for the Vishuddha chakra “I speak my truth with courage and integrity”.

Third Eye chakra, also known as the Ajna chakra. It is located between the eyebrows. It is represented by the colour indigo. When the Ajna chakra is balanced, we feel content, intuitive and forgiving. On a physical level, it helps balance our left eye, face, spine, nervous system, lower brain and pituitary gland. Affirmation for the Ajna chakra “I see the truth. My future is calm. My past is healed and released”.

Crown chakra, also known as the Sahasrara chakra. It is located at the top of the head. It is represented by the colour violet. When the sahasrara chakra is balanced, we feel enlightened, modest, and at peace. On a physical level, it helps balance our right eye, upper brain and pineal gland. Affirmation for the Sahasrara chakra “My thoughts create reality. I connect to my highest wisdom and manifest a peaceful and calm world”.

The subject of Chakras is vast, and I could talk forever about them 🙂 However, I hope this has given you a quick overview and whetted your appetite to find out more. There are many books and meditations which can help expand your knowledge and help heal your body and mind through finding balance within the Chakra system. During one of my Chakra-focused Yoga classes, Workshops or Retreats, we may use yoga asana, pranayama, mudra, mantra, positive affirmation, essential oils and nutrition, to help bring balance to our chakras on a physical and emotion level … Check out my annual 1-Day Chakra Yoga & Reiki Retreat, which takes place in a quiet valley tucked away at the bottom of South Devon, the perfect location to help find stillness, balance and peace of mind.

Om Shanti …
